The Neighbor
By Mark Spencer

A boy had fallen into a well,
His mother heard his frightened cries.
She saw a neighbor and called for help,
"Please save my son before he dies."

She knew her neighbor was very strong,
He'd been a Marine in the war.
He would be able to save her boy,
Her plea, he could never ignore.

The neighbor climbed down into the well,
And pulled the boy up from that pit.
He returned the lad to his mother,
A deed she would never forget.

Her husband came home late that evening,
And he heard the news from his wife.
If it had not been for the neighbor,
Their child might well have lost his life.

He asked: "Why would you ask him for help?"
He grabbed her shoulders and he shook.
He said: "Can't you see that he's colored?"
She said: "Sorry, I didn't look."

End.
