Time ticked and then it stopped
Her husband arrived on the dot
He casually beat her to the floor
Then just as casually went out the door.
The woman wept and sobbed and cried
Slowly got up and dried her eyes
Put on makeup to hide the bruises
Made her alibis, her excuses.
Used to this nightly brutal assault
She knew deep down it wasn’t her fault
She wanted out, game over, the end
Those little white pills were her only friend.
Anti-depressants the doctor said
Will make her calm, relaxed instead
Of the paranoia that watches her back
Poised and armed, ready to attack.
The woman knew what she had to do
To be fully rid of this nightly taboo
She took the pills, she took them all
She felt the pain and started to fall.
Her eyesight slowly dimmed and failed
Inhaling stopped, she never exhaled
But as death claimed his rightful fee
The women smiled – she was free.
